Support Our Transitional Living Program.
TLP Expansion Project needs your help.

Shelter's Transitional Living Program has been operating successfully and safely in Arlington Heights for nearly a decade, but now needs a new home with more space and more modern safety features. We have recently purchased a property in Arlington Heights that will allow more of our young people facing extremely difficult circumstances to overcome those challenges and become independent, productive members of our community.

We need the support of the Shelter community and Arlington Heights residents to make this a reality. We need a special use permit from the Village of Arlington Heights to operate the TLP at this new site and we are seeking letters of support for the zoning change. Please click HERE if you are interested in signing a letter of support to the village or if you would like a sample letter to send on your own.

The TLP serves young people 17-21 years old who have overcome abuse, neglect, and abandonment. Often these young people enter the program lacking the basic life skills that we take for granted, like how to budget finances, apply for a job, grocery shop, or even do the laundry. Shelter's credentialed and experienced staff teaches these and other vital, foundational lessons to the TLP residents so they can build their independence and flourish as adults.

Arlington Heights Mayor Tom Hayes often says Arlington Heights is a village of “good neighbors.” Supporting this move and embracing the young people of TLP will help Arlington Heights positively impact our next generation and ensure the future success of our community while being a village of “good neighbors.”

Do you know a teen who is "couch surfing?"

The school year is quickly approaching and there are young people in our community who may lack stable, fixed, or adequate housing. Youth Homelessness is not only an urban problem. In Illinois, the counties of Cook, Kane, DuPage, Lake, and McHenry account for more than 30% of the state’s homeless youth population. Shelter’s Youth Experiencing Homelessness (YEH) program takes a housing-first approach and provides individualized support and comprehensive services to increase the safety, well-being, and self-sufficiency of youth experiencing homelessness. It is voluntary and confidential. For more information, contact Nina at Nalhaj@shelter-inc.org.
