In this issue: Voting for Judges, Clinical Program Expands, Home is Where the Heart Is Gala, Winter Coat Drive, We're Hiring!

On November 3, YOU be the Judge

For the majority of voters, the judicial races, aka all those unfamiliar names at the bottom of the ballot, get either a default vote of “yes,” “no,” or they skip over them, saying, “I don’t know anything about them.”

Local judges have as much impact on your life, if not more, than the American President. These are people who make decisions about our community, our families, employment, health care, civil rights, housing, safety and even traffic tickets every day. They have too much power to dismiss as insignificant.

If you haven’t cast your ballot yet, there’s still time to be an educated voter without having to stay up nights reading court records. We’ve given you a good start by listing some informative, non-profit resources below. All are non-partisan designed to help you make your own choices. While some sites listed are focused on Cook County, similar sites are available for any county.

VoteForJudges: Find out the recommendations for local judicial candidates from The Alliance of Bar Association made up of 12 independent bar associations whose members rate judges on their qualifications.

BallotReady: Put in your address and have every referendum and candidate on your ballot explained.

Ballotpedia: Rich in information, this site can give you a preview of your ballot, information about all the candidates, and issues you’ll be asked to vote on, from gun control to taxes. Both Cook and DuPage Counties are reviewed.

Shelter Expands Mental Health Services

Feedback from our clients, stakeholders, and our community has always been a Shelter priority, and when they talk, we listen. Anna’s story was typical of what we kept hearing:

My husband and I have a 10-year-old biological daughter, and we’re foster parents to two brothers, 8 and 9. The boys grew up in an abusive household and are having difficulty adjusting to a new type of environment, and our daughter has become withdrawn with the boys needing so much of our attention.

Knowing the kids would all benefit from mental health therapy, we looked into it, but it was impossible. No one in our area took our insurance, and the cost was way over our budget. Even if we could afford it, with one car, two different work schedules, and kids in school, we never would’ve made three different appointments a week.

In response to the needs of children and families in crisis, Shelter is introducing our new Clinical Program. Our staff of experienced, licensed therapists will provide mental health counseling for children we serve and their family members whose mental health impacts their outcomes.

Thank You!

Thank you, golfers! The annual Michael Portelli golf outing "changed course" this year from a one-day outing to a four-day golf event to comply with public health restrictions. Groups golfed at the beautiful Mackray Memorial Golf Course in Barrington in support of Shelter's vision that all kids grow up in safe and nurturing homes and raised $18,000 for Shelter programs.

Thank you, trivia buffs! Our friendly virtual Trivia Night competition drew 75 participants from all across the U.S. and helped raise $1,500 for the kids and families that need it most. Watch for another Trivia Night to be held this winter.
